The chignon is classic hairup style often used for weddings and prom nights as well as formal balls. Although different from the bun
the chignon is similar and can be achieved on mid-length, as well as long
hair. Extra long hair however is not suitable, as there is nowhere
to tuck it, unless you want to create a variation with stands
hanging down or poking for a less traditional hairstyle. Avante-garde hair styles like the style to the left often use fake hair extensions moulded around a chignon foundation which is then bobby pinned or hair gripped to the head.
Tools and other bits and pieces
you will need:
- Chignon foundation (looks like
a doughnut with a tiny hole in the middle). You can buy one
to match your hair.
- Covered band
- Hair spray
- Hair pins or grips to match hair
color
- Paddle brush (best type of brush
for a smooth effect)
- Pin-tail comb (I prefer a metal
tail comb but a plastic tail will do)
Method:
- Comb or brush your hair back into
a ponytail just a little higher than your nape. Secure with
a covered band.
- Pull your hair through the chignon
foundation.
- Taking a small section of the
ponytail at a time tuck it around the foundation and secure
it in place with a pin or grip. If your hair is longer you may
want to wrap it around the base of the ponytail to hide it.
Your hair is too long for this style when you wrap it around
so much that the chignon moves away from the head!
- Keep doing this until all of the
hair is pinned.
You may want to hide the pins with
a scrunchie or ribbon. A natural hair look scrunchie or the type
with the sticky out bits of hair looks good over chignons.
Alternatively try the Uma Thurman
look sweeping the hair back from a side parting and then letting
some of the ends fan out in a spray of hair. This works best if
your hair is straight. Finish with some gloss spread over the
hands and then smoothed over the hair.
