Pharmaceutical and prescription treatments for hair loss have been shown to scientifically treat the problem of male pattern
baldness or thinning. One is available over the counter and the
other only through a General Practitioner/Doctor or Dermatologist. Of
the two main types, one is a lotion that you apply to the scalp or affected
area and the other is a tablet which you take orally.
Pharmaceutical
Treatments in the form of a pill:
The first
type is a prescription medicine that is only available for men.
Good results have been shown in preventing hair loss in many,
but not all, men and additionally hair regrowth can occur in some
cases.
It is taken
as a continuous treatment of tablets and works by decreasing the
production of androgen hormones shown to be one cause of male
pattern hair baldness.
Daily usage
needs to continue for at least 6 months before a reduction in
hair loss or increased hair growth can be seen. In some cases,
it may take up to 12-18 months for a significant change to be
noticeable. Treatment must be continued to maintain the halted
hair loss and, in some cases, continue regrowth. Upon stopping
treatment, hair loss will recommence at the same rate of hair
loss before treatment. If after 12 months, hair loss has continued,
please consult you General Practitioner.
For further
information on the product or an assessment of your hair loss,
please refer to your General Practitioner for further information.
Pharmaceutical
Treatments in the form of a lotion:
The second type is a
medicated solution used to treat baldness or hair loss. It's
available in two percent and five percent concentrations. You
apply it twice daily, directly onto the scalp in the hair loss
area. In many countries, The 5% solution of this product has been
approved for the treatment of hereditary male pattern baldness
and the 2% percent solution is also approved for female genetic
thinning. It's not clear how it works but one theory is that it
opens up the blood vessels and stimulates the hair follicles with
increased blood flow. It may work better on the top and back of
the scalp than it does on the front or sides.
In medical studies,
40 to 75 percent of men who used this treatment for 12 months
reported new hair growth. Among women who used it for eight months,
46 to 60 percent grew new hair. It may take up to four months
to see the effects. If you don't see results after four months,
you should stop using it. To maintain new hair growth, you must
continue to use it every day. If you stop treatment, your hair
will return to its pre-treatment growth pattern.
Pregnant or nursing
women should not use these products. Also, people who are age
18 or younger should not use this product unless directed by a
doctor. If you don't have a family history of hair loss, or if
your hair loss is patchy or sudden, check with your doctor before
trying this treatment.
